ANCIENT ART OF HUNTING WITH BIRDS OF PREY

EXCLUSIVE DUNROBIN FALCONRY DISPLAY

De Arte Venandi cum Avibus

‘De Arte Venandi cum Avibus’ is Latin for ‘The Art of Hunting with Birds’. Falconry is the ancient art of keeping, training, and hunting with birds of prey. This ancient sport is one of the oldest applications of aviculture that we can document – prehistoric cave paintings may have depicted falconry work, and stone inscriptions portraying falconers have been dated to the 13th century BCE. However, originally, it was not a sport, but a means of acquiring food, even if it was typically reserved for nobility.

Falconry is one of the most ancient ways to hunt. In fact, humans partnering with raptors to hunt for food is the oldest documented relationship between people and animals. There’s good evidence humans have been using birds to hunt since prehistory, upwards of 12,000 years ago. Falconry was originally developed as a means of hunting fast or difficult prey as food for the table, and is still practiced for this purpose in many parts of the world today.

Dunrobin Castle Falconry Display includes birds of prey flying demonstration on the Castle lawn, when you watch a spectacular show featuring Peregrine and Gyrfalcon as well as Harris hawks, you also learn more about other local birds of prey as well as the ancient art of falconry. Dunrobin falconer demonstrates and explains the different hunting methods used by owls, hawks and falcons in a series of fascinating aerobatic displays. To train one of these fierce and fabulous birds is a long and difficult process and requires patience, expertise and dedication. Dunrobin Falconry Display is a unique opportunity to experience this ancient art.
